Flames midfielder Robert Ng’ambi netted his third South Africa Premiership goal of the season when his Platinum Stars drew 2-2 with table-topping Kaizer Chiefs at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo Province on Tuesday night.

Ng’ambi, now the leading Malawian scorer in the PSL, put Stars ahead on eight minutes after latching onto a through ball, but Chiefs responded through Siphiwe Tshabalala and Tefu Matshamaite before Stars’ Rodgers Eliazer snatched a late leveller.

Magolokodi Ngele eventually replaced Ng’ambi in the 76th minute as Chiefs preserved their 13-point lead whereas Stars are 12th having on Saturday defeated Moroka Swallows 1-0 through Ndumisa Mabena’s strike.

Stars coach Allan Freese told SuperSport television that he was content with Tuesday’s result, adding: “I’m happy for the boys, they gave their best and we will take it from there.”

Still in South Africa, Kinnah Phiri-coached Free State Stars lost 0-2 to Mamelodi Sundowns at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday to remain second from bottom of the 15-member league on 14 points from 14 games.

Cuthbert Malaija and Khama Billiat scored for Sundowns in Kinnah’s third game as interim coach for a third spell. He lost the other two games which he was mandated to prove his worth for a head coach position vacated by sacked Belgian Tom Saintfiet.

At Free State Stadium, Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango, who plays for Bloemfontein Celtic came in as a 62nd minute substitute for Dumisani Zumba. Celtic who lie 10th on 16 points lost 0-1 to Wits University on Sunday.

Wits won through an 85th minute goal by Ben Motshwari. Mhango, who is yet to score this season, also played as substitute in a 0-1 loss to Stars last Wednesday at the same venue to slip by a position. Defender Limbikani Mzava did not feature for Celtic.

Veteran Flames striker Esau Kanyenda led the line for eighth-placed Polokwane City (20 points) as they defeated Chippa Stars 3-1 also on Saturday at Peter Mokaba Stadium. ■
